Environment Research Center has said that the Center has found evidence that an additional part of Male’s northeastern reef had developed a crack and collapsed. The collapse is believed to have happened in March.

According to a press release, the Center had made a Geotechnical Assessment in the area from 10th to 16th of this month. After the assessment the Center had found that that further cracks had appeared around the already damaged reef.

“The 70 meter long crack in the area is still expanding,” said an official from the Research Center. “We are doing all we can to stop this.”

The Center had said that after conducting several surveys with the help of a foreign specialist, they had now had several options available to them to keep the situation from getting worse. The Research Center added that further details would be submitted to Government authorities later this month.

Environment Ministry had said earlier, in May, that the cracks found on Male’s northeast side reef slope had been getting worse.
