It has been five days since the boy, Shifau Ismail of G. Thanburuge, was taken to the hospital after the beating near Olympus Theatre on Majeedhee Magu and he has been in a coma since then. His older brother Bishar said that his condition had been getting worse every day.
“Just now the neurosurgeon took a look at him and said that there was no hope,” he said yesterday morning. “The only sign that he is alive is that he has a pulse. His blood pressure continues to dive. The only reason his heart rate is staying constant is because of the injections, doctors said.”
He also said that doctors were against taking him abroad for further treatment as his condition was far too critical for him to be moved.
“Doctors have even forbidden him to be moved out of the ICU ward for a CT Scan even,” Bishar said. “So they won’t allow him to be taken on a five or six hour journey to another country. Even now the BP and hear-rate is being kept constant with the help of injections. So we don’t know what to do now. When he was first brought to the hospital his pulse was at five or six but later it dropped to four even. Now they’re keeping it at 4.8 with the help of drugs. The doctors have said that there is no hope. They did not say that he was clinically dead so we don’t want to disconnect him from the machines that are keeping him alive. If there is even the slightest brain activity then there is hope the doctors said.”
Bishar said that the attack on his younger brother had left his skull cracked in places and that blood was seeping into his brain. Doctors had said that there was nothing they could do for him. Shifau had been hit at the base of his head with a blunt weapon and had been stabbed viciously in his chest also.
When he had been attacked on the road, Shifau had run into G. Galolhu Aage and climbed to the third floor. His attackers had followed him and caught up with him there and then beaten him mercilessly using iron bars and wooden clubs before running away.
When Haveeru reporters went to the ICU Ward where Shifau was being kept yesterday they found that he was completely motionless except for his breathing. His broken arm had been bandaged and elevated over his head. His brother said that Shifau had showed some moment in his arms even on the second day at the Hospital but that there had been no movement after that.
