Most people know about the thriving Maldivian communities in Colombo, Trivandram and Kuala Lumpur, but few have heard of a more modest collection of Maldivians, up at 1,400 metres above sea level in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.
Buses full of people make their way through the red dirt roads being constructed, probably for the first time since independence from Britain in 1948. Scores of people of all ages walk in lines through and out of the jungles, which were once occupied by rebel forces.
During and after the 26-year long civil war in Sri Lanka, many leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), which fought for a separate state for the Tamils, renounced violence and joined their one-time enemies.
