Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) revealed yesterday that on the basis of information received, the probe into the alleged attempts to torture and assassinate former President Mohamed Nasheed during the transfer of power on February 7 had been completed.
During a press conference held yesterday, Commission’s member Ahmed Abdul Kareem detailed that the investigation into the events of February 6 and 7 and the resulting report had included the alleged attempt made on Nasheed’s life. Declining to reveal further details, HRCM said that the report would be forwarded to the relevant authorities within a week or so.
According to Kareem, HRCM had probed the human rights violations during the protests and other events on February 6 and 7. To that end, incidents such as the taking over of the State television station MNBC One and the attack on the then ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) camp had been included in the report, HRCM stated.
“Even on February 7, several people had been injured during the clashes at Republic Square. However, we have not investigated the actual downfall of the government as it is not something entailed in our probe,” Kareem explained.
Vice President of HRCM Ahmed Tholal also insisted that the commission had probed any possible human rights violations of the then President Nasheed during the regime change on February 7.
HRCM further admitted that a technical glitch in their website had hampered the publicizing of the report and other ongoing work of the commission. But HRCM failed to disclose the date in which their report on February 6 and 7 would be published.
