Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the people behind the regime change would propose to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to 4% from the existing 6%.
While on his trip to Kaafu Kaashidhoo, Nasheed said that the government was “toppled” by a few businessmen to protect their interests and that these businessmen would resist parting with a small of portion of their wealth to be shared with the people.
Former President also said that GST is a mechanism which helps in providing a lot of services to the people of the country and that these businessmen who had “toppled” the government are working on ways to reduce the percentage of the tax or to stop it from being taken.
Nasheed criticized the current government for its decision to allow businessmen to pay resort bed taxes in installments and said that his government had earlier planned to collect the taxes in a lump sum which would have yielded great benefit for the people.
Former President Nasheed has concluded his trip and returned to Male yesterday morning after his tour to Kaafu Gaafaru and Kaashidhoo.
