Former Housing minister Mohamed Aslam and former National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal have together published a report based on the downfall of former President Nasheed's administration on February 7, 2012.

The report was officially launched by former President Mohamed Nasheed and took three months to prepare. The report contains the major factors of the ‘coup’.

Speaking at the report launching held at Male City Hall former Housing minister Aslam said that though several publications regarding the day has been published each giving different accounts of what happened during February 7, 2012, the truth needs to be conveyed.

The reports has been launched after the Commission of National Enquiry (CNI) published it’s own timeline which according to the opposition had several inaccuracies to it.

Aslam claimed that the timeline published by the CNI set up by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to investigate the events leading up to and following the downfall of former President Nasheed’s administration comprised of “Inaccuracies far from the truth” while some factors had been omitted entirely.

He said that the power transfer did not happen overnight but “is the result of days of planning by some people”. Among these people Aslam alleged are leading religious scholars, politicians, local media sources and several businessmen while conspirators within the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) were used to implement the plan.

Aslam explained that while former President Nasheed was present at the MNDF headquarters, violence within and outside the headquarters of the security forces was used to show that former President Nasheed had lost power, including endangering the people and his family which forced Nasheed to resign.

“Some might find it convincing that several people are behind the incidents of February 7 and thus the real conspirators are safe amongst the vast numbers involved. It won’t happen so, this isn’t the Maldives we know from the past,” he claimed.

Ameen Faisal said that Police from several ranks and levels had provided information to compile the report and thanked the Police for their cooperation.

He said that he hopes that the Police will share further information regarding the ‘coup’ and he also noted that several factors had been omitted from the timeline published by the CNI.

Ameen claims that the report prepared jointly by him and Aslam is not based on rumors but on fact and proof.
