Newly elected Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Moosa 'Reeko' Manik has said that the 'coup' leaders including Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed will be sent to prison for a long time.
Home Minister Jameel had previously stated that based on the actions of former President Mohamed Nasheed during his term in office, he would most likely "go" to prison almost permanently.
In response Moosa said that the leaders of the ‘coup’, police and army officers, who had assisted would be subjected to just punishment. Moosa said that he was quite certain that Jameel would also be jailed, MDP website reported.
“We will not be afraid of Jameel, we will not be afraid of Habeeb, neither will we be afraid of Nazim” Moosa stressed.
He said that the government is trying to expel officers from the police and the army who oppose the ‘coup’ and that former intelligence department head, Mohamed Hameed is being interrogated after being arrested.
Home Minister Jameel previously stated that that major crimes allegedly committed by Nasheed had been investigated and was now at the prosecution stage.
“It includes the case known to all which is the unconstitutional arrest and subsequent detention of Criminal Court’s Chief Judge. I’m quite certain that Anni (Nasheed) would be found guilty in that case by a court of law,” Jameel claimed.
Jameel further said that the former President has also been accused of some corporate crimes. To that end, misusing many companies that had funds and assets of the government and actions by Nasheed that had caused severe damage to the State and the country, are included in the allegations against the former President, he explained.
