Islamic Ministry has stated that the Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas has personally offered to sponsor scholarships to Maldivian students.

Deputy minister Mohamed Qubad Abu-Bakr said that an Islamic ministry delegation had held discussions on mutual assistance between the two countries with the Palestinian President on a recent visit. He said that the Palestinian President had agreed to sponsor scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students at Jamiatul Gudhus.

Islamic Ministry, Permanent Secretary Mohamed Didi today said that such an offer has been received recently and that a decision has not yet been made regarding the matter yet.

Mohamed Didi, who also happened to be in the delegation, said that it was a good offer but a decision would be made, based on the situation in Palestine and which would also depend on the condition of the environment and if it is suitable for Maldivian students.

“Maldivian students haven’t been to Palestine before. It is a good offer, yet a decision would be made assessment on the conditions,” Mohamed Didi said.

He added that the Islamic Ministers of both countries had discussed on strengthening the relationship between the two countries and to develop mutual assistance.
