Police arrest 38 in MDP protests yesterday

Maldives Police Services (MPS) has stated that 38 people have been arrested during the protests by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) yesterday.

Police media official yesterday said that 32 people were arrested from the gathering by MDP at Republic Square after the Friday prayers. He added that six others were apprehended during the MDP protest last night. One woman was among those arrested yesterday.

MDP protesters gathered at the Republic Square yesterday evening at around 5.00. Police cleared the Republic Square while the armed forces with shields blocked off the area.

Former Transport Minister Adil Saleem and MDP flagman Somad was arrested in the protest at Republic Square which lasted for about an hour.

Protesters retreated as the security forces escorted them outside the green zone area, near Reef side. It was almost Maghrib prayer time by then.

MDP protest last night started from Chandhanee Magu at 10.00 calling for the announcement of a date for early elections. Police informs that the protest ended peacefully at around 2.00 this morning.

Police later revealed that four of the detainees from yesterday had been tested positive for illegal narcotics. Gaafu Dhaal Gahdhoo, Bansareege, Ismail Abdulla, 29, Henveiru Fenthilage, Mohamed Sobah, 39, Haa Dhaal Vaikaradhoo, Huvandhumaage, Hussain Mufeed, 43 and the only female arrested in the protest Mahchangolhi Shah, Aishath Laisha Abdulla, 24, tested positive for drugs.
