Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted the case of
the delay of publication of investigative reports on Police brutality
during the unrest following the resignation of former President Mohamed
Nasheed by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) to the
Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
In a press statement issued by the party’s parliamentary group, it was stated that HRCM had claimed to the media that it had investigated the “inhumane acts of the Police” following the transfer of government and had prepared a report on the matter.
But given that the report has not been publicized so far MDP has branded it as manipulating the power of a position for ulterior benefits of a third party and MDP’s Maafannu-South constituency MP Ibrahim Rasheed submitted the case for investigation by the ACC.
The statement reads that HRCM is delaying the publishing of these reports to achieve a certain political purpose and that MDP condemns the act and calls on for the immediate publication of these reports.
It was further stated that HRCM is acting in violation of the freedom to information and revealed that when the party had requested for the report they were told the report can only be made available depending on the decision made in a meeting of the members of the commission.
