Blood donation website and SMS system introduced

Dhiraagu has introduced a website and SMS system for blood donors yesterday.

The website ‘blood.mv’ and the SMS system set up by the initiative of local company Celltech Solutions was handed over to the Health Ministry today at a ceremony held at Traders Hotel. The SMS system was set up by the Dhiraagu on Celltech Solutions initiative.

Speaking at the ceremony Health Minister Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed said that though the Maldives is a small country it comparatively requires a lot of blood for medical purposes and that the establishment of such a system is essential.

“This day is historic. Now we’re seeing the contribution of the productive youth of the Maldives. The government has been toying with idea for a long time now however has been unable to do so due to the procedure of matters within the government,” Dr Jamsheed said.

Chief Executive of Dhiraagu Ismail Rasheed also spoke at the ceremony and said that the company assisted the initiative as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“We assisted Celltech Solutions when they approached us with their initiative and we did it for free, and we will donate the proceeds from the SMS system to the Thalassaemia Centre,” he said.

Interested donors are also able to register through the SMS service and those seeking donors can search through the SMS system as well.

Donors can simply write REG and their ID card numbers and send an SMS to 678 and those seeking donors can write their atoll code and island name and the needed blood group and SMS to 678 and the text will be sent to a donor with the needed blood type.
